Knock off a set here, a set there

First up, to all the veterans who served in the military here in the US or abroad, thank you for your service.  Happy Veterans Day to all of you out there. I guess you could say I’ve been converted.  Tony from the Off Hiatus blog got me started on the Just Commons website train a few weeks ago, and after the 2nd transaction that I recently completed, I must say I’m impressed.I actually have a good story about the Just Commons site that I’m going to save until the weekend.  In short, I’ll say that it was definitely a positive experience for me and I’ll be sending more business their way in the future. But for now, I wanted to show off a few cards that knocked off some Blue Jays want lists out of this last order.1994 Score is the first victim here, with these 4 cards in hand I was able to remove this set from the giant want list.  One of these days I’m going to have to put a checklist together of Carlos Delgado cards that feature him in catchers gear, because I keep finding more.  Love the shot of Pat Borders on the bottom getting ready to tag Ivan Rodriguez out at the plate. I see these two cards, sit here and scratch my head and wonder how I didn’t have them in hand.  I collected so much ’92 Ultra back in the day.  Crazy.   But, it’s another set that is no more.Yep, the final piece of the ’91 Bowman puzzle was Roberto Alomar.  Usually when single cards sit on a want list for as long as this one did, it’s usually because the player is a star.  That’s the case here, along with the next card up….The addition of the ’81 Donruss Dave Stieb card means that any card that I need prior to 1984 is either from Topps (2 cards) or O-Pee-Chee (115 cards).  I don’t know what’s worse, the 2 card want list from ’77 Topps or the fact that I counted out 115 cards that I need for OPC sets.  It’s amazing just how many players from the Jays and Expos that OPC featured. A little bit of art to finish off the post, as this ’87 Leaf Diamond King card of Lloyd Moseby wipes another set off the board.  A great likeness of the Shaker if you ask me…In addition to completing some sets that have been worked on for a long time, I’m trying to knock the Jays want list down some.  I’m trying to be a little more realistic and remove some of the rarer parallel sets off of the list while using Just Commons to whittle down the mainstream sets.  Just in case you’re wondering, there’s a lot more to this order than just these 5 cards, trust me.Thanks for reading, Robert

A lot going on lately, so it's time to start catching up

It’s been a very momentous week for our country, as you well know.  I’m not going to get into any kind of political discussion here, because we’re all about the cards.I actually have a few posts to accomplish, one of which is tonight’s post which I actually meant to do 3 days ago, but a wicked headache stopped me in my tracks.  Then Tuesday came which I’ve already mentioned, then discussion with my friends on Wednesday evening about Tuesday, and well you get the idea. One of the drawbacks to moving south (if there were to be any…) is the fact that I’m no longer within a reasonable drive from the Hockey Expo, which is going on this weekend in Toronto.  I know that Doug from the Sportscards from the Dollar Store blog is headed there this weekend, so I’ll be living vicariously through his posts over the next week.  If any other of my blog pals from Southern Ontario are headed that way this weekend, let me know and I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for your posts as well.Speaking of hockey cards, I had meant to post 5 more cards from the hockey themed serial insanity set until what no doubt was too much thinking caused my head to explode on Monday.  So, without any further delay, let’s get to it.Here’s Martin Straka again, making another appearance in the set, this time in a Rangers jersey.  This ruby version of his card from the 2007/08 Black Diamond hockey set is #’d 55/100.One of my first introductions to serial numbered inserts was this Fantastic Finishers quantum card of Pavel Bure from the 1998/99 Upper Deck set.  For those of you not too familiar with the Russian Rocket, take a look at his top 10 goals video on You Tube and get an idea of what a special talent he was.  This card as you can see is numbered 57/1500.I have quite a few numbered cards from the 2002/03 Pacific Quest for the Cup set.  Shaone Morrisonn is one of them (Pronunciation video can also be found on YouTube here).  Shaone had a decent NHL career, lasting 480 games and is currently in the KHL with Zagreb Medvescak.  This card is numbered 69/950I remember when the Maple Leafs signed Jason Blake after he had a 40 goal season in 06-07 with the Islanders.  He was supposed to be the big time scorer that the Leafs craved to play with Mats Sundin.  Didn’t quite happen that way, and after just 50 goals in 2.5 seasons, he was moved to Anaheim.  This card is #’d 178/200.Finishing off this group of 5 is the 1999/00 Pacific Omega card of Tyler Wright.  Tyler was the first round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in the ’91 entry draft, but never materialized into the scorer that they hoped he’d be, and wound up playing in Pittsburgh, Columbus and Anaheim before playing a final season in 06/07 in the Swiss league.  It’s a little tough to see, but the front is numbered 203/299 on this card. With this post, the set is down to just 4 teams that don’t have a card posted yet; Carolina, Dallas, Detroit and Winnipeg.  We’ll get that fixed hopefully before too long. Thanks for reading, Robert

Congrats to the Cubs, and a bit of blog “maintenance”

First off, congratulations are in order to all the Cubs fans out there, your patience has finally been rewarded!!The Cubs winning their first World Series is good for me, as it moves my beloved Maple Leafs a little closer to the top 10 in terms of championship futility, which is approaching 50 years.  Why is that good you ask?  Well, the way I see it, teams that haven’t won championships in 5 or 6 decades are trying a little harder these days to “right the wrong”, and the Leafs are well on their way to doing that as well.A good portion of the Cubs core is young, so they might be dominant for quite a while. The blog maintenance is something I’ve been poking around with for a couple of weeks now.   I’ve added a bunch of new want lists, and I’m migrating my hockey want lists over to this blog as well. You’ll see 3 tabs at the top, one is the long standing want list which is now the “Want Lists–Almost Complete” list.   It’s relatively small, with just the ’15 A&G set, ’64 Topps, ’73 Topps and the ’11 Heritage sets being really close to completion.  Combined, those 4 sets need only 22 more cards.  I just might be able to wipe them out by the start of the New Year (yes, it’s only 57 days away…).There’s also a couple of new lists, one is “Want Lists–well under way”.  These are sets like ’62 Topps, ’68 Topps, ’70 Topps and a few hockey sets that I’ve been working on for quite a while now.  Those lists are complete want lists, typed out painstakingly. Finally, I added a third page of want lists, the “Want Lists–Just starting out”.  There are 11 sets that I eventually want to complete on there right now, such as1980 Topps, of which I own just 32.1982 Topps, I’m up to 44 of these including the Nolan Ryan you see there…And 1967 Topps, one of the many vintage sets that I want to finish some day.  I have 88 cards from the ’67 set, including the Mays/McCovey card you see which I bought at a show for a mere $5 a while back.  Lucky me….Note, on the just starting out tab, the numbers on that want list are the cards that I own.  I did that because it was a helluva lot easier to type out a few numbers than want lists that were 500-600 numbers long.  Those sets I’m also going to try and follow Commish Bob’s advice and find some larger “starter lots” to try and make things a bit easier.   Using this search on eBay I believe will help me out in the long run.  I just have to be patient and picky with what I buy.If you have something on these lists that you think I might want, let me know.   Comments or emails are always welcome. Thanks for reading, Robert

My first Just Commons order with a bit of a twist

I recently read on the Off Hiatus Baseball Cards blog about Tony’s purchase from the justcommons.com website.   I decided to give it a go, and proceeded to place an order for 59 Jays cards, as I was trying to pare down that massive list a bit.Completing the order was pretty harmless, and payment was easy, so I proceeded to wait roughly a week for the cards to come.Sure enough, 5 days later, an envelope came.It wasn’t my order though.  The folks at Just Commons had sent me someone else’s order.  When I opened the envelope, I was taken aback for a minute, because I didn’t remember ordering cards from the ’64 Topps set.  Sure enough, there were 3 very nice EX-MT cards in there.  What was interesting is that the remainder of the order contained a healthy stack of 2006 Topps, mixed in with a few Heritage cards from the late 2000’s.  I thought that I was the only one who mixed vintage cards in with stacks of newer (relatively) product. It was a Thursday I believe, and I really couldn’t do much about the mix-up at the time, so I decided to wait until Saturday before contemplating what to do.  The next day, my cards came.  So what I decided to do was send the cards from the first envelope back to Just Commons, instead of sending them on to the actual owner (his information was in the envelope on the order sheet).   For me, this made sense because I figured that sending them back could allow for the site to fix their mistake, instead of sending them to the end customer and having them potentially deny that they ever received them. I was able to send the cards back this past Saturday, which made me comfortable enough to show off what I had actually ordered.  I’m not going to show all 59 cards, but I’ll give you a healthy dose of Blue Jays on this post.I thought only Panini produced cards without logos…that’s the first thing that struck me when looking at this ’92 Pinnacle card of Pat Borders. We’ll start a few six packs off with a trio of sets that are no longer on the want list.  I only needed the one Fleer Ultra from ’91 for the longest time, and now Dave Stieb is finally part of the collection.  Only needed a couple of ’96 Leaf cards, now I have ’em.  Love the SP releases that were a staple of Upper Deck in the mid 90’s.  That’s another set that I crossed off….Skipping the six packs for just a second, had to show off this great horizontal shot of Ed Sprague from ’93 Topps.  Fantastic shot of Ed making contact!Grabbed 6 ’92 Bowman cards, but still need 3 more to finish off that team set.   I keep forgetting that Jack Morris joined the Jays for the ’92 season.  The gold Derek Bell border did not scan well at all, it looks more gray than any other color.Wow, the O-Pee-Chee lists from the early 90’s are still huge!!  Imagine that, another shot of Devon White losing his helmet while running the bases.  It’s a wonder there weren’t more concussions back then with guys losing their helmets while running or sliding into bases.Shiny goodness.  I still have a hard time remembering that Topps Chrome had a set as far back as ’97.  I know there’s a couple of Carlos Delgado collectors out there, I wonder how you guys do it as it seems he has like a bajillion cards.Horizontal for a little change of pace.   Wondering if Kelly Gruber was in a jail cell somewhere when they took this picture for his ’92 OPC card.   Love the shot in the lower right of Molitor celebrating what I’m hoping was their World Series win in ’93. See what I mean?  More Delgado!!  I never really thought that I would find a whole lot of cards of Carlos in catcher’s gear, but here’s two more examples…wonder how his career would have been different if he had stayed behind the plate.Even with the little mix up, I’ll definitely give the Just Commons website another go.  The prices were reasonable and the shipping was quick. Hopefully next time I’ll only get what I asked for….Thanks for reading, Robert
